Raj Ghat is at the northern end of the ghats of Kashi, near the Malviya (Dufferin) Bridge, close to where the Varuna meets Maa Ganga.
Near the Northern Boundary of Kashi
The Kashi Khanda names the Asi and the Varuna as the southern and northern boundaries of Kashi, which is why the city is called Varanasi. The Varuna meets Maa Ganga just to the north of Raj Ghat, and Adi Keshava Ghat at that meeting is the last of the five tirthas of the Panchatirthi yatra of Kashi.
One of the Oldest Places of Kashi
The Rajghat plateau above the ghat is one of the oldest settled places of Kashi. Archaeological excavations here have found remains of the ancient city, a reminder of how long devotees have lived beside Maa Ganga at this place.
Coming to Raj Ghat with Reverence
Best time: early morning, October to March.
How to reach: by road towards the Malviya Bridge at the northern end of the city, or by boat along Maa Ganga.
At the ghat: dress modestly, take your holy dip only where the steps are safe, keep away from the bridge and the boat landings, and ask before photographing anyone.
And in the morning or the evening, come to Shivala Ghat, where ShivBodh Trust offers the Ganga Aarti every day – our gratitude to Maa Ganga, who has only ever given.
