Janaki Ghat is the ghat of Mata Sita, on the banks of Maa Ganga in southern Kashi, just north of Bhadaini Ghat on the way to Shivala.
The Ghat of Mata Janaki
Janaki, the daughter of King Janaka, is a name of Mata Sita. In 1870 Rani Kunwar of Sursand, in the Sitamarhi district of present-day Bihar, made the ghat partly pucca and built here a shrine of Mata Janaki. The ghat has borne her name ever since.
A Ghat of Daily Worship
In the early morning devotees take their holy dip in Maa Ganga and go up for darshan of Mata Janaki. The ghat is part of the continuous walk along the steps from Assi to Shivala.
Coming to Janaki Ghat with Reverence
Best time: early morning, October to March.
How to reach: walk north along the steps from Tulsi Ghat past Bhadaini Ghat, or come by boat along Maa Ganga.
At the ghat: this is a ghat of daily worship. Dress modestly, take your holy dip with care and away from other bathers, keep your voice low in the early hours, and ask before photographing anyone.
And in the morning or the evening, come to Shivala Ghat, where ShivBodh Trust offers the Ganga Aarti every day – our gratitude to Maa Ganga, who has only ever given.
