Dashashwamedh Ghat

Dashashwamedh Ghat is the most prominent and vibrant ghat in Varanasi, located close to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. According to mythology, Lord Brahma performed the Dashashwamedh (ten-horse) sacrifice here, giving the ghat its name. It is the spiritual heart of the city and the primary venue for the spectacular evening Ganga Aarti.

The Grand Evening Ganga Aarti

Every evening, Dashashwamedh Ghat hosts one of the most magnificent religious ceremonies in India — the Ganga Aarti. Priests in traditional attire perform synchronized rituals with large brass lamps, accompanied by Vedic chants, drums, and conch shells. Thousands of devotees and tourists gather to witness this divine spectacle.

Best Time to Visit

The evening aarti begins about two hours before sunset and is the best time to experience the ghat. Arrive early to secure a good viewing spot or book a boat seat for a unique perspective from the river. The ghat is also beautiful during sunrise for a quieter, more meditative experience.
